IBEX Steam Technology Advances On-Site Testing with Funding from Emissions Reduction Alberta, NRCan IRAP and Oil Sands client
Calgary, Alberta, March 31, 2025 – IBEX Steam Technology has achieved a significant milestone in its journey to transform steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) processes in Alberta’s oil sands. The company received funding from a major oil sands client and Emissions Reduction Alberta (ERA), a move that confirms the commercial value proposition and underscores the province’s commitment to supporting innovative technologies aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions intensity and enhancing industrial efficiency.
Building on two previously successful projects funded by Alberta Innovates and the NRCan Industrial Research Assistance Program (IRAP), this latest initiative aims to demonstrate long term steam generation with live emulsion and provide prototype scale up data for the next phase of commercialization. This funding enables on-site testing at a major oil sands host in the third quarter of this year.
The cutting-edge IBEX proprietary steam generator technology is designed to directly convert emulsion into steam, recycle the steam back into the reservoir, and optimize energy use. By eliminating the need for central water treatment facilities and boilers, the technology promises to significantly reduce the environmental intensity of oil sands operations while improving economic performance.
The upcoming trial at Exergy Solutions in Calgary and the client field trial will provide critical data to validate the reliability, operability, and environmental benefits of the IBEX system. Once proven, the technology could be broadly adopted across Alberta’s SAGD oil sands industry, contributing to the province’s goals of sustainable development and emissions reduction.
This funding highlights the collaborative efforts between Archer BD Inc, industry partners, ERA, Alberta Innovates, and NRCan IRAP to drive innovation and address environmental challenges in Alberta’s oil sands sector. The results of the on-site testing are eagerly anticipated as a potential game-changer for the industry.
